new poster for Maine Academy of Modern Music (MAMM) in my series of Yankee Lanes posters

So I have a new poster out for Maine Academy of Modern Music’s series of concerts at Yankee Lanes. I really love making these posters! I am trying to go for a fun feel for them as the concerts for by kids, and really, for kids (and their parents).  Hopefully you will see more of these posters as time goes on.

This was a tough poster to pull off. The concert is titled “girls rock!” and they have female speakers during the concert as well. I really didn’t want to make my poster vomit hearts and puppies, but at the same time I didn’t want to seem feminist as well. I think the magenta and cooper typefaces make a gentle poster that kind of sits in the middle of those extremes. I consider this poster a success. Again, this is a poster that is about you kids concert, but adults are involved as well and so I didn’t want to see as whimsical as the first poster. This was a fun, challenging poster, and I am glad to have a part in advertising for the events!

So this is my last entry in my series of posts about my first semester work. This is the first assignment I had at school. We had to make posters for an alumni show. I was stuck with some very busy pictures, but I learned a bit about inserting text into a picture where I didn’t think that I could. I tried as much as possible to let my image itself dictate how I placed the text I needed into it. The goal, for my series of posters anyway, was to make the text appear as if it belonged to the picture. In the top image I noticed that she had alot of pictures on the wall that made boxes in the background. I saw that I could put my text in boxes, and so made the texts and the boxes the same colors as her clothes. I spent along time pondering the solution and could not think of a better solution.

The next poster required a little more thought. Unless I added a box on the side I would not be able to place any type in the image at all. I took a floral texture that I found at Bittbox here, because I thought that it tied in nicely with the elements in the picture. The type itself is called Powell Antique, and again I thought it fit with the image. I think that the posters are a success. They were received quite nicely. I hope that my work will be received nicely here on the web as well. More schoolwork to come as my new semester starts Monday January 11.

So, this started out as a simulated identity project for the non-profit group, Maine Academy of Modern Music. They are a group that teaches kids about music, and being in bands, and really taking over for where music education ends. Check them out here. My class worked on a new logo for them, and a new website redesign. They liked my logo best, and needless to say, that really put a fire under my butt to do some more work for them. I submitted this poster as an idea, and only an idea. They loved it. I figured, this event takes place at a bowling alley. Let’s tie that in. Bowling pin playing a guitar. Great. I will be producing a series of posters for them in this line of thinking, as well as other posters and designs. More on that in the future.

the new logo

Here is the new logo, by itself. It uses a combination of Futura and Decade. The idea was to look safe (Futura, for the parents) and yet cool (Decade, for the kids). It was kind of a balancing act. I am happy with the outcome and looking forward to the new identity the group will be embodying in the future.

The next piece on the list is this piece. A limited edition print inspired the folks at Hatch Show Print. Visit them here. This assignment was an extension of the Design Prolifics assignment, and one that was much more fun. The piece is quite literal in its content. It is a limited edition piece, that advertises its “limited-edition-ness.” I just enjoy having fun with my content, especially if it is just for an assignment. On the other hand, though, it is not just one run only. It is two.

The prints are number to 38 and most are gone in a similarly rare collection of art. They were printed at the Pickwick Press in the Artist Studio Building, in Portland, Maine. Megan O’Connell provided the Vandercook Press.

So for my next few posts, I will be uploading my work from this semester. I have really grown as a designer this semester and I am proud of all most of my work. Hence, my putting it out for the world to see. First image is of a poster designed to be quite literal. It is a poster I designed that consists of a poster I made for it. (It is still hard to explain…) I tried to take influence from some of the designers on the poster, like Wolfgang Weingart, Ed Fella, and Stefan Sagmeister; so basically I attempted to be unconventional. And I think I did it. This project really made me start to feel comfortable at MECA, and with my own ideas. More work to come…

also, MECA will be really cool, and i cannot wait to attend in a few days!!!!!

first project for MECA (maine college of art)

so, this is my first project for school. it just kinda came to me. well,  after weeks of thinking that is. i think that school is going to be fun, but i am still scared to move. let’s see how it turns out. maybe soon (after i get settled in in ME) i will upload more work!
